The Cyps and Chalinochromis have no interest in digging. The similis want only a thick blanket of shells; substrate is immaterial. I don't use CO2 or liquid ferts in this tank; the fluorite is porous and during the years I've run this as a planted tank it has picked up plenty of ferts which the plants, primarily root-feeding species, use. When the heaviest root-feeders (the sword, crypts, vals) start to fail I add a root tab in that area. I intend for this tank to, in a few years, be a thriving colony tank for the similis and Cyps; the Chalinochromis don't, I admit, fit the plan. I'll likely move them out pretty soon. |
